Northern Lights Hunting

Our guides are Northern Lights hunting professionals actively monitoring the Northern Lights and solar activity throughout your trip, ensuring that they are always ready to guide you to the spectacular aurora borealis.

During three evenings (which we will select) of your holiday, our guides will be searching the night skies and seeking for the best possible place from where you will be most likely to see the Northern Lights. Sometimes, the journey isn’t that far at all, as the Northern Lights can occasionally be visible as soon as you step out of your cottage! Through careful analysis and planning, our guides always choose the best nights, places, and times for your Northern Lights hunts.

What would a holiday be, if you didn’t have stunning photos to remember it by? That’s why you will also receive photography guidance and direction from us. Our guides are passionate about photography and will help you take the best shots with your camera, if your camera is suitable for photographing the Northern Lights, as night photography requires certain settings and features that your camera and lenses be capable of. If you have any questions about the Northern Lights prior to your trip, please feel free to contact us. If you are fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights, our guides will gladly take pictures for and of you with the Northern Lights; so that you will get a memory of the Northern Lights even if you don’t have your own camera.

The Utsjoki village in Lapland during winter

Utsjoki - Stories from Historic and Modern-day Life

As part of your holiday, we want to tell you about local life and history of the area. What better way to do this than to tell you stories about Utsjoki and Sámi culture and show you some local attractions, from past to the present? This program is always planned according to each day’s opportunities and availability.

Feeding the reindeer at a reindeer herding farm in lapland Finland

Feeding the reindeer

As a traditional Sami reindeer herder family, we have some resident reindeer around our resort. During the winter the reindeer are fed every day and as our guest you’ll get to experience what it is like to feed reindeer. You’ll get to join us and the reindeer in their enclosure for the feeding. And if the reindeer are feeling brave, they’ll eat directly out of your hand.

Reindeer are not fully domesticated animals though. As a responsible travel operator we want to respect their natural tendencies and will never force human interaction with them. By nature reindeer do not like to be touched. Unfortunately at some tourist attractions they don’t have a choice on the matter, which causes them a lot of stress and discomfort. When you feed the reindeer with us it is always on the terms of the animals, which makes the experience more memorable when a shy animal chooses to approach you.

Optional activities

During the winter season you can add any or all of the below optional activities to your holiday. The holiday package includes activities for three nights (aurora chasing) and one daytime activity of reindeer feeding. You can opt to spend your days either chilling and relaxing in the resort area or keeping busy experiencing the optional activities we have on offer.

Northern lights tours in Utsjoki Finland
Northern lights holidays in Finland

Join us for a holiday that makes dreams come true!

According to old myths, the Northern Lights appear when a fox is running along the sky. People believed that the sparks from the fox’s tail create the phenomenon that we call the Aurora Borealis. During your six-day adventure to Lapland, we will lead you into the wonderful and mystical realm of northern nature. Leading you on this adventure are our experienced Northern Lights guides. In addition to these intimate nature experiences, we’ll also pamper you with our chef’s exquisitely designed and prepared dishes.

In Utsjoki, located in the far north of Finnish Lapland, the Northern Lights can be seen from September until the end of March. Nature is wonderful yet unpredictable, and as such we cannot always guarantee the appearance of the Northern Lights. Nevertheless, our experienced and passionate guides will always do their best to make your dream of seeing the Aurora Borealis come true and provide you with the best opportunities to experience everything Lapland has to offer.

The Magic of the Aurora Borealis & Arctic Winter is an all-inclusive, Northern Lights-focused holiday package that includes accommodation in a Finnish holiday cottage with a private sauna, as well as food prepared with care from local ingredients and complimented by beverages reflecting the tastes of the North. In addition to the Northern Lights hunts included in the holiday package (three nights) and the Utsjoki village tour, you have the opportunity to book additional winter & cultural activities of your choice and according to your interests. All you have to do is arrive to Ivalo at the appointed time and we will take care of everything else.

Wonderful week in a Beautil location with stunning skies! We spent a wonderful week with Tiina and her team at Aurora Holidays. Our primary guides, Maria and Emilia, couldn't have done any more to make our stay truly memorable. Even if the weather locally doesn't look great, the team will drive you almost anywhere to give you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. In our case we had a cloudy start to the week, but persistence was rewarded with some beautiful skies later on, mostly right by the river outside our cottage. Utsjoki being so far North makes all the difference to your chances of a good display, with lights visible even when the Solar activity isn't very high. Our cottage was very comfortable, warm (important given where it is and the time of year!) and well appointed. The food was lovely - all prepared freshly using local produce. As far as trips are concerned, we highly recommend the Husky Sledging and Snowmobiling but remember you may be up late at night Aurora chasing so make sure you grab some rest in your cottage Sauna while you can!

A spectacular experience in Lapland! I had a wonderful week at Aurora Holidays. The host, Tiina, is terrific. The food was delicious and was tailored to my needs as a vegetarian. Daytime activities were as promised. I went dog sledding, visited a reindeer herd, went on a snowmobile trip in the wilderness, and went to Norway to see the Arctic Ocean. The cabins are very comfortable—the sauna was a perfect way to warm up after a night of watching the northern lights. And the northern lights were spectacular—a true bucket list experience. I can’t say enough about the place and the people.

Best place to see the northern lights in amazing wilderness! In late October I decided that I wanted to see the Northern Lights again, after checking with friends it became clear quickly that my best chances would be somewhere in Northern Lapland. Looking closer I found Tiina's family business with full board catering and of course the best chances to see the Lights. Tiina made sure to meet all my travel requirements and even got an extra driver to pick me up at Ivalo Airport as my flights got delayed. After driving 2 h through the arctic landscape we arrived at the shores of the Teno River and had some time to rest in my Finn Hut with its own sauna and all you need to feel right at home. The food was amazing and local stuff dominates the menu, with reindeer, arctic cod and fish from local lakes. But Tiina and the chef will make sure that you feel right at home there with vegan and vegetarian options provided. The first night we didn't see the aurora due to clouds. Next morning the skies started to clear and we did a snow shoe hike up to a hut on the fell where we had a fire and sausages. After resting and another amazing dinner the skies cleared and the Northern Lights began to shine faintly at first before filling the whole sky and dancing wonderfully above our heads. The happened the next two nights. As a photographer I was keen on exploring the area a bit an one day the Jonna took me on tour for three hours and the other day Tiina took us to Nuorgam up on a fell were we witness the beautiful arctic twilight. Also feeding the domestic reindeers was a cool experience and I learned a lot about the Sami culture.

Wonderful vacation with Aurora Holidays. The host and her team are the best in class! Utsjoki is a hidden gem for Aurora Chasing. Importantly, when the sky is clear, aurora chase is effortless by sitting around wood wire in a hut and monitoring the live stream for the first sign of green light and then walking several steps to river bank. The cabins are spotless and filled with the host's thoughtfulness. What you need are all in there. Food is wonderfully prepared, healthy, and artistically presented. Tiina, Rayann, and Lisa are wonderful souls.

Aurora Holdays experience. We looked for a fall getaway to see the Northern Lights. We found sites that cost less but offered less. Some had you make your own meals, some had no daytime activities, some were not in the best location for viewing. Aurora Holidays had it all for a fair price: location (dark nights with unobstructed views, being far enough north the lights were overhead as well as on the horizon); three full meals plus snacks (gourmet quality food, presentation, and service); full service bar; clean new cabins; and the most warm and welcoming hostess and staff. We felt like and became a part of the family. We experienced so much more than great views of the lights; we had guided hikes, tutoring in photography, learned about reindeer and herding, and enjoyed a peaceful and quiet place to rest and relax. It was a perfect getaway holiday, and during these covid concerns we felt safe and secure the whole time. Tiina, thanks again from your Florida family.
