Activity Description

Experience the beauty of Arctic nature with happy huskies outside of the snowy season.

This half day excursion is all about living in harmony with nature and offers excitement, beauty, cuddles, and probably the most entertaining walk in the arctic wilderness you’ve ever known.

This experience includes:

  • A kennel visit to learn about the dogs, the husky activities, and possibly meet puppies.
  • A short hike ( 30min to 1hour) in pristine Arctic nature, eagerly assisted by retired sled dogs.
  • Lunch, snack and warm drinks by the fire overlooking a beautiful alpine lake view.
  • Possibility to enjoy wild swimming in the lake ( sometimes accompanied by the huskies)
  • Campfire dog stories told by your host, and warm snuggles are provided by the dogs.
  • Transportation departing Aurora Holidays
  • A tour guide will be with you the entire day.

At the end of this excursion, we hope you feel an enhanced connection to Arctic nature. And that you’ve felt invigorated and free speeding through the Arctic landscapes with happy huskies, who showered you with affection by the fire after the hike as you listened to the stories filled with furry adventures.

Difficulty level: easy.

This activity is suitable for anyone with a basic fitness level and can walk a few kilometers in uneven terrain in nature.

There is also a shorter route available to the lake view with the campfire and picnic, should you wish to forego the hiking portion of the trip.

How your husky activity does good and why responsible tourism is important

Unlike in many places, a husky’s life at this kennel doesn’t end after the dog is past his sled-pulling prime. The dogs at our husky activity partner’s kennel get to live out their lives in the kennel and the environment they’ve grown to call home. Even though the dogs get affection and exercise at the kennel, the older dogs really enjoy going on adventures with guests. They may have been deemed not fit to run as sled dogs anymore for their own health and safety, but they sure do love pulling hikers in amazing Arctic Norway landscapes and getting lovies by the campfire.

By choosing a truly responsible husky activity provider, you are using your voice to encourage the industry to become more humane and responsible as a whole.

By choosing a husky activity outside of the snowy season, you are helping the small businesses in their efforts to run a year round sustainable business that can better care for their staff and doggies.

By choosing a husky hiking activity, you are also giving the retired sled dogs an extra opportunity for adventures and snuggles.

Husky activities in Lapland

Many have come to believe, that husky sledding has roots in the Finnish or Sami tradition. This is not true. Actually for thousands of years the Inuits used dogsleds to cross harsh terrain and the activity became a symbol of northern life.

Husky  hiking adventures in the beautiful and serene Northern Norway wilderness we offer together with Levajok huskies, offer an opportunity to experience the authentic nature while enjoying a taste of northern life with the dogs.

Unfortunately, the popularity of husky sledding activity in Lapland has also engaged too many operators, that don’t prioritise the wellbeing of their dogs.

It was very important to us at Aurora Holidays to be able to offer memorable husky activity to our guests, but to do it in a truly responsible way. We wanted to make sure the dogs are trained with positive methods and never have to fear, suffer, freeze or go hungry.

At Levajok huskies the dogs are visibly happy and confident around people and their handler. They have their own cozy houses in a nice environment, and they get exercise and affection on adventures and in a running enclosure. Huskies born at Levajok are all well adapted to arctic conditions and can truly handle the cold outside. (many dogs used in the industry are bred for fast running which means longer and leaner bodies with less fur to withstand the elements).
